A chart signature compresses the overall pattern of a natal chart into one zodiac sign. It does not replace the Sun, Moon, or rising sign. It answers a narrower question: which element and modality occur most often across the planets?
The basic equation is:
dominant element + dominant modality = signature sign
For example, Earth plus Cardinal gives Capricorn. Air plus Fixed gives Aquarius.
Step 1: Count the elements
Assign every included planet to the element of its sign:

If five included planets are in Earth signs, three are in Water signs, and two are in Air signs, Earth is the dominant element.
Step 2: Count the modalities
Count the same placements again by modality:

Suppose the count is five Cardinal, three Fixed, and two Mutable. Cardinal is the dominant modality.
Step 3: Cross the two results
The dominant element and modality point to one sign:

The number before each label is the number of included placements, not a percentage.
Modern versus traditional calculation
There is no single chart-signature convention used by every astrologer. This calculator exposes two explicit methods so the result is reproducible:
- Modern counts the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
- Traditional counts the seven classical planets: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
Removing the three outer planets can change both the dominant element and modality, so the two methods may produce different signatures for the same birth chart.
If the element count is tied, the calculator uses the Ascendant as a tiebreaker and includes its modality in the recount. If a tie remains, it returns no single signature instead of choosing one arbitrarily. An accurate birth time matters because the Ascendant, angles, and houses move throughout the day.
How the dominant-planet table is scored
The table below the calculator also shows why a planet ranks highly. Each total is the sum of five columns:
planet total = sign + house + angle + ruler + aspects
- Sign: 0 to 6 points from sign strength, from detriment through domicile.
- House: the modern method rewards the 1st and 10th houses and a planet's symbolic house; the traditional method gives 2 points in whole-sign angular houses.
- Angle: a planet within 6 degrees of the Ascendant or Midheaven receives 5 points; proximity to the Descendant or IC receives 3.
- Ruler: points accumulate when a planet rules the Ascendant, Midheaven, or another included planet's sign.
- Aspects: major aspects add points when their orb passes the method's planet-specific limit.
The dominant percentage is simply:
planet total / total points for all included planets × 100
This planet ranking is related to, but separate from, the raw element-and-modality count used for the signature sign.
